Yoko Ichikawa and Ultramarinedream translate Greek masterpieces into Street art

Ancient Legends Reinterpreted is a joint open air exhibition by Yoko Ichikawa and Ultramarinedream. Both artists found inspiration in ancient spiritual archetypes during their FaveLAB Artist Residency in Athens in June 2024.

The two ONE+ONE artists have used their cultural resources to interpret Greek trademarks from the collections of National Archaeological Museum such as the bronze statue of Zeus/Poseidon of Artemision and the Attic late geometric amphora by the Dipylon Painter, thus creating fresh and colorful drawings.

Due to a heatwave, the planned exhibition has been changed to an open-air action starting Saturday, 15 June 2024 at 2:00 PM. Posters of the artworks are displayed to view, comment or appropriate in the streets of Athenian neighborhoods such as Kypseli, Exarchia, Psyri and Kolonaki. Art lovers may also spot a big variety of works posted around Kypseli Square, along Fokianos Negri and in the Kypseli neighborhood.

Viewers are welcome to make selfies with the artworks and email us their pictures at favelab.info@gmail.com to publish through FaveLAB’s social media.

Ancient Legends Reinterpreted focuses on two challenging topics of our times; namely, on how tourists understand and integrate into their own aesthetic and conceptual background a famous, yet foreign, culture; and on how extreme weather phenomena can force artists to leave their comfort zone of gallery shows and experiment with innovative presentations.

Japanese artist Yoko Ichikawa used illustrations and cyanotypes to depict the traditional Christian theme of the "Way of Jesus“. An archaic black-figure pottery decoration inspired the work. The simplified iconography of people and animals in ancient Greece seems to be analog to the pictograms of today. With this work Ichikawa attempts a new interpretation of traditional motifs.

Ultramarinedream is a Canadian artist based in Germany. She started making paste-up (paper-based) Street art in 2020, mostly based around the Greek myths she grew up reading about. You can stumble upon her works wherever she has travelled, and at street art festivals around the world.
